First, I want to give him a little intro. His name is Dan Shanahan and I met him a few years ago on Christmas night when I lived in Oregon. He was (and still is) a pretty nice guy with a talent for music.. I remember at the end of the night he sort of jokingly serenaded us all and I was taken with his artistic talent and very unique voice. I’ve always thought that he could be really famous if he really wanted to, and anyway throughout the years we’ve sort of kept in touch and I am always touched when he reads my blog and gives it positive feedback.
His words in this e mail come from my last blog post which was about performing when you know you are being watched and anyway his acknowledgment of my work and his words of wisdom and understanding honestly and truly helped my headache to go away quickly… almost immediately. And I thought, “Wow. This is some truly wonderful feedback for an artist.. maybe other people would benefit from reading this too.”
So, here is the e mail:
Hey, I really dug your blog and wanted to say you’re right on the money when a lot of people hit that artistic wall when people are watching… I thought I might commiserate and offer encouragement?
I’ve hit a few walls in my music, long story short I found I worried too much about other peoples criticisms and suggestions that I lost track of why I even picked up a guitar; which was to let my soul out. So I stopped worrying about who was listening to my music or what they thought of it and focused on being an artist again instead of a performer. And when criticisms come I stop people and try to say with a smile I’m happy with where the music is at. It may be a little rude, but I found being an artist you have to do this for yourself and your passions.
So long story short, that’s an abbreviated version of my journey and I know nothing of how to run yours and have no place doing so. But I see a lot of growth and energy in this blog and just want to say if you feel like a failure at all your writing has obviously touched some people, myself included, and that is the core accomplishment of a great artist. If people disapprove of something you are doing, that’s their problem if your content with your decisions. So if you ever get that book done let me know where to buy it
Wishing you the best in your travels,
